this Article About
the Author Bibliography/Sources
Below is an map the EHL has
published charting the historic power and influence of the
Dutch nation and ethnicity in the last 500 years. It includes
both colonial and national expansion, along with convenient
historical information next to each region. It does not show
the power extent of the Netherlands at a specific time, but
rather all throughout its history. If you have any questions,
feel free to notify us.
Mapping Information &
Extra Notes:
Nations or regions fully
ruled by the Dutch Empire are shown in red,
whereas regions only partially ruled or simply settled/occupied
are shown in blue. For example,
South Africa was never ruled coherently by the Netherlands,
but was extensively occupied and settled, and is therefore
in blue. This map does NOT include simple trading posts and
settlements, as there are far too many to even chart in a
map for our exclusive European colonial/imperial map series.
Though the Netherlands ruled
modern-day Malaysia, Malakka, and Brunei Darusalaam's region,
it is not charted as completely under Dutch rule as most of
the history of Dutch rule of Malaysia consists of constant
dispute over territory with England and Portugal. The entire
claims were transferred to the British 1824.
