There is probably a healthy middle ground here and askantik I think alludes to: it would be great to see the US government, our government, take action to support efforts in this vein, like, oh, I don't know, changing the CAFE standards or at least letting my state, California, change them if the federal government will not.

In addition because the majority of charging will take place during non-peak hours they will use energy that is otherwise going unused, this is because coal electricity plants can't simply shut down. These will not cause additional pollution, they simply use energy that is going untapped. Then after we exceed the current supply of surplus energy we will build newer and unimaginably more efficient coal plants and maybe even green alternatives.
