I think the reasonable thing to do at this point is to start investing for the future. If you own your own home and plan to live their for more than a few years you should invest in solar panels. Photovoltaics now take about 7-8 years to pay for themselves before going cash positive. Solar hot water heaters are about 4 years. Those estimates are for New York and include tax incentives. If you anticipate that electricity will go up from the current prices it makes even more sense to make that initial investment especially since it will increase the resale value of your home. At the very least this should provide some insurance against rising fuel prices which do appear on the rise.
