It's not just RPGs. I played it via ROM for the first time a couple of years ago. I couldn't touch any of my much more recent games for a couple of days afterward...they all just seemed to pale in comparison, especially story-wise. Movies seemed bland for a while too. Amazing how great of a story it had, and how much better of a job this 16-bit game did of telling it than many high-budget movies do. The visuals, the music, the sound, they all just came together in the right way.
