The idea with electric cars is that instead of doing the energy conversion on a local level it can be done on a industrial level and in terms of efficiency can benefit from an economy of scale. Electric cars are obviously not the cure all but become significantly more sustainable and an easier link in the infrastructure given a change to more renewable energy sources.
