The most viable option I've seen until battery tech improves significantly is electric cars that have fuel cell capability for distance/emergency. Daily cruising is handled by batteries, but if you need to go far or need power when you don't have time for a full charge up, hydrogen. Unfortunately, that requires a hydrogen infrastructure which is even more of a challenge than just charging stations. Either way, electric vehicles are inevitable and some places are already starting to install charging stations, such as Google's HQ and I think Seattle.
